As someone who is not obsessed with youth, it feels kind of funny to be writing this blog post. But I encounter so many people who are genuinely shocked when I tell them my age that I thought I should spill my secrets. What better time than today, my 35th birthday, to share with you how I capture youth and how you can too.
1. Good Skincare
I used to be one of those people who did extreme things to my skin. I'd use a salicylic acid grapefruit face wash at the first sign of a pimple. Once I used a heavy duty spot treatment on a flight back from New York City. By the time I got home, my pimple and the skin around it felt like it was burning off my face. I was all about those super intense face masks that make your skin throb and turn super red afterwards.
I don't use any of that stuff anymore. My skincare routine is much more gentle and streamlined with very few new products introduced. If my skin is feeling a bit dry, I use a hydrating serum. I opt for fruit enzyme masks over those intense clay ones. Mostly I think I'm just much more in-tune with my body and my skin, and only give it what it's asking for, not what the store or latest craze is telling me that I need.
2. Reduce Stress
This is probably the biggest reason why I have been able to not age beyond my years. Even when I think back to ten years ago when I was 25, I feel like I looked older then than I do now. I had deep forehead wrinkles from all the frowning and stress. And no, I haven't had Botox, the wrinkles just gradually reduced as my stress level lightened up.
I can't tell you exactly how you can reduce stress in your own life, but I can give you a few tips that you may be able to apply.
3. Follow Your Happiness
Probably one of the biggest ways I have reduced stress in my life is by going after what I love to do. I've gone down multiple career paths, started businesses, traveled the world, and chased my passions even when they seem silly to others. For example, last year I worked as an extra and stand-in on TV shows, allowing me to experience TV and film production that I had always been interested in.
I have a saying, "Let the world stop me. I'm not going to stop myself." What I mean by that is if you're curious about something and you want to try it, go for it. Don't stop yourself before you even give it a try.
4. End Bad Relationships
There is nothing more draining than a bad relationship. Nothing. It's a soul killer because it creates an unhealthy dynamic in your life that carries over into everything that you do. How you can you be fully present when you are fighting a battle within? Yes, that's right, a bad relationship ultimately creates a battle within yourself because you end up having to compromise who you are to make the relationship work.
Youthfulness comes from a joy and curiosity. Healthy relationships allow us to shine and bring out the best in us, ultimately allowing us to express ourselves to the fullest.
5. Quit Jobs
Notice I didn't say "quit bad jobs." I think our relationship with our work is one of the more complicated things that we have to figure out in our lives. We all want work that is rewarding and taps into our greatest talents and abilities. Unfortunately, that can be hard to find and even to create yourself as an entrepreneur.
I've found that the only way to go on this journey is to not get stuck, to keep moving forward, and to go towards the unknown, which will ultimately help you to grow. Ask yourself this: Am I dreading being here? Do I feel like I'm dying? Then leave. Am I scared but also thrilled by this challenge? Then go do that.
6. Wash Your Sheets, Towels, Etc.
Ha ha, something light again after all those deep topics. I wrote this one down because I think that having good hygiene and also a clean environment have a lot to do with healthy skin. I know for me that a lot of my skin issues when I was younger were from not taking good care of myself. A dirty pillow case would cause a pimple and then with all those harsh treatments I would use, would make my skin red and irritated. So yes, just some basic home cleanliness can make a huge difference in how you look and feel.
7. Eat Vegan Food / Go Towards Health
You probably know if you're reading this that I live a vegan lifestyle, or at least as close to 100% vegan as I possibly can. I attribute a lot of my youthfulness to my diet because it feels good to eat foods that are nourishing my body and also in line with my values.
I know that a lot of people think they can't live a vegan lifestyle, but I would still encourage you to go towards health in your daily decision making. Whenever you are craving something healthy, give in to that. Do things to take care of yourself and that you feel good about doing. Do things that make you feel alive. For me, that means drinking green smoothies and going for walks in the sunshine.
Whether you care about looking youthful or just living your best life, I hope you found these tips helpful. I'm still learning and growing and trying to figure everything out too. Hopefully by the time I am 40 I will have even more helpful tips to share!
