I’m one of those people who’s always jumped at the chance to take a “What is your style?” quiz in a magazine. I’ve spent countless hours Googling things like “How to find your style” and “Style quiz”, only to find that the results were superficial and unnecessarily segmented. I usually came out as a “Classic style”, one who likes black and white clothing, not too many prints, and a good set of pearls. Is this really me? Yes and no. I do like straight lines, black and white clothing, but I also like a bit of ruffle, a splash of color, and elements of movie star glamour in my looks. So who am I really and why do I care so much about finding my style?
Well, you probably noticed that I wrote, “who am I?” when trying to find my style. That’s because for me, and maybe for you, style is tied so closely with who we are. It’s defines us as we walk into a room. It says, hey, I’m serious and professional, but I also like to have fun and a bit of whimsy. Or maybe it says, I’m a really big Lady Gaga fan or I just came from spin class. Whatever you are wearing, it’s your calling card to the world, the way we communicate so that others can see us for who we are, what we like, and connect with us.
Unfortunately, no 10-question quiz can answer these things for us. They come from a deeper place than “am I a Carrie or a Samantha?” [I’m pretty sure I’m a Carrie, by the way.] They come from asking, what do I value in the world? Who am I when I am at my very best? For me, the answer is someone who consciously wears clothing and beauty products that align with my values of being vegan and cruelty-free. And the best part is that I’m learning that I don’t have to sacrifice style in the process.
