I chose micellar (pronounced my-CELL-ar) water as the first product from Velvet Report because it's one of those things that I struggled the most to give up when I went 100% vegan and cruelty-free with my beauty products. Before that, I was addicted to a certain pink-capped micellar water that I would buy at a French pharmacy whenever I was in Paris and fit as many bottles as I could into my suitcase. Or I would spend 4x the price and order it on Ebay, praying that the bottle didn't explode in the shipping (once it did and I only received a water logged box when I went to the post office to pick it up.
Why do I love micellar water so much? If you're into beauty, it's one of those cult products that you grow up hearing about. The makeup artists use it backstage at fashion shows to clean the models' faces before they apply their makeup. The models buy it in droves during Paris Fashion Week. It's one of those products that used to be highly coveted and hard to find, but due to globalization, you can now pick up some version of micellar water at your local pharmacy.
The problem is, although most of these are vegan, they are not cruelty-free and non-toxic. Most mainstream micellar waters contain propylene glycol, an alcohol-based formula that is found in antifreeze. Although propylene glycol is not highly toxic, it can be quite irritating to the eyes.
The good news is that the Velvet Report micellar water is free of propylene glycol and all other toxic ingredients! It's vegan, cruelty-free, and made of natural ingredients. It's made of micelles, tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules, that are suspended in soft water, so it cleans your face while hydrating it at the same time. It's a makeup remover, face wash, and hydrator in one!
Micellar waters can be used by anyone but they are particularly good for people with sensitive skin because they clean the face without scrubbing action, soap suds (which can be drying), or hard water that is full of minerals. You don't need to rinse so you're basically cleaning your face with the gentlest ingredients possible.
The Velvet Report micellar water comes in a glass bottle with a spray top. The glass helps to make sure there is no plastic toxins leaching into your product. Also you can reuse the spray bottle after you use up the micellar water, perhaps by making your own cucumber toner? The spray top allows you to control how much product you are using. Simply spray on your face and then wipe makeup and dirt away with a cotton cloth or pad. You can also unscrew the top if you prefer to apply directly to the cotton pad (I do this when removing stubborn eye makeup).
