Even though I did decided to end my no buy experiment early (quite a bit early!), I still learned some things from my experience that I want to take with me.
Appreciate What You Have
I learned to take better care of the things that I already own. One of my favorite skirts was starting to come apart on the side seam so I took it in to the dry cleaner to have it fixed. In the past I may have thought to go to the mall to look for a new skirt in a similar style since it's definitely my most-worn skirt.
You never really know how much you own (unless you're moving of course!). I took a video inventory of all of my beauty and fashion items and found that I had accumulated quite a bit. Some of the natural beauty products that I had came with expiration dates so I decided to use those up straight away. I was also able to see just how many things I had in certain categories so it was a good reminder that I didn't need any more.
One major reason that I wanted to do a no buy was to get creative with the things that I already owned, both by blogging about them and actually using them. I combined outfits in new ways and thought about videos that I could create by using the products that I already owned rather than getting new things.
Use Things Up
I was able to use up 21 products during my 47 day no buy. 21 products! Sure some of them were sample and travel sizes, but still it felt good to reduce my total number of items to something that is more manageable. I also threw out a few things that I knew were old and probably going bad. I also learned that my skin doesn't like harsh detoxifying masks so I won't be using those any longer.
Probably the number 1 thing that I learned from my experience was the importance of being intentional. Right before starting the no buy, I had decided to give up purchasing fast fashion. I kind of see my no buy experience as a detox because now I have no desire to ever buy fast fashion again. Even though I have started purchasing again, all of the items I've bought or am thinking of buying are from sustainable eco-friendly fashion brands and green beauty brands. The no buy gave me the space to make this switch in my mind and actions.
So that's all that I learned at this time. I may do a no buy experiment again in the future but I'm hoping that I will just be able to apply these lessons to my daily behaviors and that I won't need to make a grand gesture like this again. But as always, never say never.
